The Freedom Riders were ready to start their journey. They were supported by the Congress of Racial Equality (C.O.R.E.). The first Freedom Ride was held on May 4, 1961. On these Freedom Rides they would disturb areas reserved only for white Americans. There were thirteen people that decided to do this. They traveled through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama. The trouble all started in Birmingham, Alabama. In Birmingham, the Ku Klux Klan (K.K.K.) was well known. They were a group of racist Caucasians. The Freedom Riders were beaten by the K.K.K. and a bomb was thrown onto one of their buses. Many were killed by this tragic action. In the end, 300 Freedom Riders were arrested.
